Why does my dog gasp for air, and then run to a patch of grass and start eating it?

Some dogs will eat grass when they are experiencing gastrointestinal upset and are nauseous.  Most dogs do not gasp for air before vomiting, he may be retching.  If this behavior continues I would have your dog examined by a veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.
